Mirror Mirror by Marilyn Singer

Singer, M., Masse, J., & Morton, J. (2011). Mirror, mirror: A book of reverso poems. Pine Plains, NY: Live Oak Media.

This book is a great way to see two sides of the story.  Read the poem one way to find out how Cinderella feels and then read it the other way to learn about the Prince's side of the story.  Lots of old, familiar tales given new life through poetry.

Assignment #1

Evaluation Criteria - Style

The book Mirror Mirror by Marilyn Singer has the distinct style of retelling parts of fairy tales through reversible verse.  Each poem is a mirror image of itself. Each way the poem is read has a very different and distinct meaning to the old fairy tales we are all very familiar with.  As the author expresses on the end page, this book is “appropriate for telling two sides of one story.” It is very cleverly written and does just that: tells both sides of many fairy tales. The illustrations on each page also show the style of the reversible verse by splitting the image. One image shows the “happy” side and then the other half will show the “other side” of the story.
