Just My Luck by Cammie McGovern

McGovern, C. (2016). Just My luck. Harper Collins.

Just My Luck is about a boy, Benny, who feels like his whole life is crashing down around him.  His father has a terrible accident while they are out riding bikes and Benny feels responsible.  His best friend moved away.

Benny's mother has a great bit of advice for all her boys: when you have a bit of bad luck, think of someone else's problems and try to help them.  This is a theme throughout the book.  The school Benny and his brother George go to institute a reward program for committing random acts of kindness.  The kids who are seen doing these things "might" end up with a footprint on the wall of the school cafeteria.  Benny feels like he is going above and beyond but never gets noticed.  Other kids who are rarely kind, end up with multiple footprints.  Benny's teacher tells him it's because he is always kind.

Evaluation Criteria:  Characters

Benny is an unusually kind-hearted and thoughtful 4th grade boy.  His autistic brother, George, always seems to say the things that everyone else is thinking but not saying and his older brother, turns out to not be your typical high school boy.
